Shopware Migration: Improve Order Processes. Reassess Platform Costs.

Is your Shopware store expensive to maintain, reliant on manual order processing or difficult to extend for B2B buyers? A move from Shopware 5 to 6 is an opportunity to compare Shopware 6, Shopify and Crystallize against your actual workflows and long-term costs.

Valanor engineers commerce platforms, storefronts, product search and ERP integrations where justified. We assess data ownership, order flows and migration risks before recommending a platform change.

When your store costs more to maintain than it delivers

A Shopware migration is not about choosing a newer platform. It is about what your store needs to do next, and what it will cost to keep it running.

Growing costs without clear returns

Hosting, plugins, upgrades, agency work and customizations add up. New requirements become more expensive to deliver even when the purchasing experience barely improves.

Moving from Shopware 5 to 6 is not a routine update

Data structures, extensions, themes, integrations and custom functionality need to be assessed and may require reimplementation. The effort can be comparable to moving to a different commerce platform.

Too much manual work

Products, stock levels, prices, invoices and shipping statuses are maintained across the store and ERP. Unclear system boundaries introduce errors and delays.

New capabilities take too long to launch

B2B pricing, customer-specific catalogs, international markets and better product discovery become difficult to implement in tightly coupled systems.

Critical reliance on individual plugins

Essential workflows depend on extensions or custom code whose maintenance, compatibility and ownership are uncertain.

Upgrade from Shopware 5 to 6 — or move to another platform?

Make the business case before deciding on the technology.

For businesses still operating on Shopware 5, a major technical change is an opportunity to reassess the entire commerce setup. Moving to Shopware 6 can be a sensible choice when your extensions, workflows and team capabilities remain a good fit.

If your current architecture already generates high maintenance and development costs, we compare staying with Shopware against alternatives such as Shopify and Crystallize. We evaluate more than licensing and hosting: migration effort, integrations, custom development, operations and the cost of future changes over several years.

Assessing dependencies, business requirements and technical options is part of our Consulting & Diagnostics service.

What a Shopware migration should improve in your operations

The platform decision should be driven by buying and operating processes. We evaluate where a new commerce architecture can create operational value, without promising savings before the baseline is known.

Reduce manual order handling

Define how orders, payment status, fulfillment and invoicing move between storefront and ERP. Event processing, retries and clear ownership help reduce avoidable manual corrections.

Support B2B buying processes

Model customer-specific prices, assortments, approvals and order conditions against real customer journeys instead of adding plugins without a consistent process design.

Keep stock and prices consistent

Specify which system owns product data, stock and pricing, how frequently information changes and how synchronization errors are detected and resolved.

Enable new sales channels

Expose product and commerce data through well-defined interfaces so new markets, portals or sales applications can be developed without duplicating business rules.

Shopware 6 vs Shopify vs Crystallize: Which platform fits?

Keep Shopware 6 when current capabilities and team experience remain a good fit. Shopify is often suitable for standardized selling processes, while Crystallize can support more specialized product models and custom order flows. We compare checkout, B2B rules, ERP integration, extensibility and total cost of ownership.

Shopify — standard commerce with less operational overhead

Shopify is a strong option when established storefront, checkout and operational capabilities cover most requirements. We assess B2B functionality, data ownership, extensions, fees and ERP integration before recommending a move.

Crystallize — more control over custom commerce workflows

Crystallize can suit businesses that need flexible product structures, a separate frontend or complex order journeys. That flexibility also requires more engineering, integration and operational responsibility.

Keep Shopware 6 — if the numbers support it

Replacing the platform is not always the best option. If the current workflows, team expertise and extensions remain viable, targeted modernization can be less costly and less disruptive.

Decide using real ordering scenarios

We compare catalogs, variants, B2B and B2C logic, checkout, tax, internationalization, discounts, ERP data flows and ongoing costs using the same evaluation criteria.

Connect ERP, order processing and storefront systems

Clear data ownership matters more than the number of tools.

Frontend: Astro can work well for content-rich commerce experiences where speed and rendering efficiency matter. Remix, or React Router, is an option for interactive purchase flows. Next.js can suit React-based commerce platforms with more varied rendering needs. We choose according to checkout architecture, hosting and required interactivity.

Product search: Algolia and Typesense can support faceted search, filters, synonyms and larger catalogs. We assess indexing, relevance, latency and operating effort. A separate search service is only justified if the platform's built-in search cannot meet your needs.

Digital assets: ImageKit or Cloudinary can manage image transformations, delivery optimization and media workflows where required. Product and asset data need clearly defined source systems and ownership.

ERP and order processing: Billbee, plentymarkets and SAP differ substantially in how they handle master data, stock, pricing, orders and invoicing. Reliable integrations require explicit data ownership, synchronization rules, retries, error handling and monitoring.

Through software development and Platform Engineering, we connect the necessary components into a commerce application that can be maintained and extended.

How we manage a Shopware migration

The migration is complete only when orders, data flows and ownership work in the new environment.

01 · Assess the current system and costs

Review the Shopware version, plugins, themes, custom code, product and customer data, ERP, analytics, SEO, hosting, payment providers and current operating costs.

02 · Define the target architecture and scope

Compare Shopware 6, Shopify and Crystallize against required features, integrations, operating responsibilities and long-term costs. Decide what can be transferred, replaced or redeveloped.

03 · Migrate data, integrations and frontend

Map and transfer catalogs, categories, variants, assets and required customer and order data. Implement the ERP interfaces, search and frontend. Assess historical records and privacy obligations separately.

04 · Test real purchasing workflows

Validate checkout, payments, shipping, tax, promotions, B2B rules, inventory synchronization, returns and failure scenarios against realistic test cases.

05 · Protect SEO and manage the cutover

Check URL mappings, redirects, canonicals, metadata and structured data. Define the data freeze, delta synchronization, rollback options and monitoring for launch.

What does a Shopware migration cost?

Total cost and your ability to make changes matter more than license fees alone.

The work depends more on product variants, custom functionality, checkout flows, ERP integrations and data quality than on product count alone. Bespoke extensions, multiple languages and requirements for customer and order history also affect scope.

We separate one-time migration costs from recurring platform fees, apps, infrastructure, search, media services, integrations and development. Shopify can simplify standard processes, while a custom Crystallize architecture may better support complex requirements but requires additional engineering.

A useful comparison accounts for the full feature scope, several operating scenarios and expected changes. Reliable estimates and savings calculations require an assessment of your existing environment.

Shopware Migration FAQ: Cost, Data and Platform Choice

Key questions about migration costs, platform selection and business continuity.

Can we migrate directly from Shopware 5 to Shopify?

In principle, yes. Products, variants, categories, media, customers and required order data must be mapped to Shopify's data model. Shopware plugins and bespoke functions cannot simply be transferred.

Is moving from Shopware 5 to Shopware 6 a regular upgrade?

No. Shopware 6 has a different architecture from Shopware 5. Extensions, themes, data models and integrations need to be reviewed and may have to be reimplemented.

When is Crystallize a better option than Shopify?

When flexible product models, specialized commerce workflows and an independent frontend are important enough to justify additional engineering. Shopify is often simpler for more standard store requirements.

Can we keep SAP, plentymarkets or Billbee?

Often, yes. The decision depends on available APIs, which systems own prices, inventory and orders, and how data needs to synchronize. We assess these interfaces before selecting a commerce platform.

Will we lose SEO rankings when we migrate?

A ranking decline is possible but not inevitable. Redirects, URL mapping, internal links, structured data, indexability and performance must be reviewed before and after launch.

How long does a Shopware migration take?

The timeline depends on data quality, functionality, integrations and testing needs. After reviewing the current system, we can define realistic migration phases, milestones and acceptance criteria.

Which data can be migrated from Shopware to Shopify?

Products, variants, categories, media, customers and required order data can be mapped to suitable Shopify structures. Accounts, passwords, historical orders, discounts and custom plugin data require separate assessment. Store functionality does not transfer automatically.

How much does migrating from Shopware 5 to Shopware 6 cost?

Costs depend on extensions, data models, custom themes, B2B rules, ERP integration, data quality and testing. The version change may involve substantial reimplementation. We compare the full effort with Shopify or Crystallize migration and ongoing operating costs.

When should we keep Shopware 6 instead of switching to Shopify or Crystallize?

Shopware 6 remains a sound option when its commerce features, extensions, team capabilities and integrations cover the required workflows at a reasonable cost. Shopify often suits more standardized commerce, while Crystallize may fit more specialized, independently engineered commerce systems.
