E-Commerce-Modernisierung

From WooCommerce to Composable Commerce: Valanor modernizes WOLFF & MÜLLER’s online store and reduces manual processes through a new architecture.

A shop that functions properly is not automatically a financially viable shop.

Starting Point: WooCommerce as an Established Platform

The previous online store was based on WooCommerce. As requirements for product variants, packaging units, ordering processes, and customer management increased, so did the manual effort required for day-to-day operations.

The products were spread across numerous pages. Different grain sizes and packaging units were treated as separate products. There was no central, filterable product overview.

At the same time, the store had to meet the needs of both business and private customers and support various delivery and ordering processes.
The challenge thus went well beyond a traditional store relaunch. It involved modernizing an existing e-commerce platform whose architecture was increasingly hindering internal processes and technical development.

It wasn't just a matter of replacing the existing platform. Its processes had to be reimagined.

Before the migration, we analyzed the existing store logic, the relevant data flows, and the technical dependencies. This formed the basis for a new commerce architecture.

Produktverwaltung vereinfachen

From WooCommerce to a composable commerce architecture.

E-Commerce Replatforming

Valanor developed a new technical architecture in which specialized systems handle different tasks.

Remix forms the foundation of the web application. Crystallize provides core commerce functions, while Algolia is used for product search. Additional services and integrations round out the platform.

The architectural change enabled a fundamental restructuring of product data, variant logic, and ordering processes.

Instead of further expanding WooCommerce with additional plugins and customizations, the functions were separated from one another within a composable architecture.

The UX/UI design was created by the Ruess Group. Valanor was responsible for the technical development, migration, and integration of the new platform.

Modernized architecture also changes the day-to-day work routine.

The technical modernization was not intended merely to replace the existing platform. The key issue was how product management, procurement, and system integrations would function in the future.

Manage product variants centrally rather than on individual pages.

The new product structure brings together different particle sizes and packaging units under a common product framework.

The result: a modernized e-commerce platform with less operational complexity.

Project Outcome

With the migration from WooCommerce to a Composable Commerce architecture, WOLFF & MÜLLER Quarzsande gained a new technical foundation for its digital sales operations.

The platform organizes product variants within a consistent data model, supports various ordering processes, and connects specialized services via interfaces.

The high level of manual effort required by the previous online store was a key driver for the modernization. The new architecture lays the groundwork for more automated product and order management.

At the same time, individual components of the platform can be further developed without tying all commerce functions to a single e-commerce system.

Not every legacy system needs to remain in operation.

Architectural Decision

If an existing system is requiring more and more manual work, the next expansion is not automatically the most cost-effective decision.

Especially with established e-commerce platforms, technical dependencies arise between product data, extensions, interfaces, and business processes. Every additional customization increases the complexity of the overall system.

Targeted legacy modernization therefore does not begin with the selection of new technologies, but with the question of which business processes the existing architecture no longer supports effectively.

At WOLFF & MÜLLER Quarzsande, this analysis led to the replacement of WooCommerce and the development of a modular commerce platform.

Legacy Modernization · Platform Engineering

Is it now very difficult to further develop your existing platform?

When manual processes increase, integrations become increasingly complex, and even minor changes require extensive adjustments, it’s worth taking a closer look at the architecture.

We analyze existing systems, identify technical dependencies, and develop a concrete path to modernization—ranging from targeted revisions of individual components to a complete replatforming.
